Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Aqueous extract of *Sargentodoxa cuneata* (AESc) is a botanical preparation derived from the stems of the *Sargentodoxa cuneata* plant, a staple in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) known for its anti-inflammatory and detoxifying properties. AESc is primarily investigated for its therapeutic potential in treating ulcerative colitis (UC) and its secondary complications, such as liver injury. The extract contains a complex profile of over 100 identified compounds that work synergistically to regulate gut microbiota dysbiosis. Specifically, AESc has been shown to increase the abundance of beneficial bacteria like *Bifidobacterium* and *Megamonas*, which in turn modulates the levels of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and organic acids. This microbial and metabolic regulation helps to restore intestinal barrier integrity and reduce systemic inflammation.
