Aqueous garlic extract (Allium sativum) is an investigational natural product formulation developed by Qazvin University of Medical Sciences for the treatment of denture stomatitis, a chronic form of oral candidiasis. The extract's primary bioactive constituent is allicin, along with other organosulfur compounds, which provide potent antifungal and antimicrobial activity. The mechanism of action involves the inhibition of Candida species growth and the disruption of fungal cell wall integrity and adherence. In a Phase 2 clinical trial (NCT01198223), the formulation was evaluated as a mouthwash, demonstrating efficacy comparable to nystatin in reducing the clinical symptoms and mycological counts associated with denture-related oral infections.
