Overview

AQW051 is a novel, potent, and selective small molecule partial agonist of the α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR). It was developed for the oral treatment of cognitive deficits associated with neurological disorders such as schizophrenia, Alzheimer's disease, and Parkinson's disease. Preclinical studies demonstrated that AQW051 enhances learning and memory performance in animal models. In clinical trials involving healthy subjects, it showed good oral bioavailability and central nervous system penetration with a favorable safety profile at tested doses. The drug was originally developed by Novartis and later re-named to VQW-765 under Vanda Pharmaceuticals[1][5][6].
