Overview
This combination intervention consists of a medical device, the Arabin cervical pessary, and a hormonal pharmaceutical, vaginal progesterone. It is specifically being evaluated for the prevention of preterm birth in women with twin pregnancies and an asymptomatic short cervix. The Arabin pessary is a silicone ring designed to provide mechanical support to the cervix and redistribute the weight of the uterus, while vaginal progesterone (typically 400mg micronized) acts as a hormonal supplement to maintain uterine quiescence and inhibit cervical ripening. The combination is the focus of the PRECEPT trial (Progesterone and Cervical Pessary in Twins), a randomized controlled study led by Mario Henrique Burlacchini de Carvalho.
