Overview

Arabinoxylan oligosaccharides (AXOS) are non-digestible carbohydrate fragments derived from the partial enzymatic hydrolysis of cereal grain arabinoxylans. They function primarily as prebiotics, selectively stimulating the growth and activity of beneficial gut bacteria such as bifidobacteria. AXOS are being investigated for their potential to improve intestinal health, modulate gut microbiota composition, reduce toxic fermentation metabolites in the colon, and support metabolic health. Early research suggests possible benefits in reducing blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes and prediabetes, lowering preneoplastic lesions in animal models of colon carcinogenesis, and improving tolerance to metformin therapy. Additionally, cosmetic applications have been proposed based on their ability to inhibit melanin synthesis via tyrosinase inhibition[1][2][3][4][5][6].
