Arbutamine is a synthetic catecholamine and nonselective beta-adrenergic agonist with weak alpha-1 adrenergic activity. It is primarily used as a pharmacologic cardiac stress agent to mimic the effects of exercise in patients who are unable to perform adequate physical exercise, aiding in the diagnosis of coronary artery disease. Arbutamine increases heart rate (positive chronotropic effect), myocardial contractility (positive inotropic effect), and systolic blood pressure by stimulating beta1-, beta2-, and beta3-adrenergic receptors, with greater selectivity for beta receptors over alpha receptors. The drug is administered intravenously via a closed-loop, computer-controlled delivery system that adjusts infusion based on real-time heart rate feedback[1][2][5][6][8].
