Arbutin is a naturally occurring glycosylated hydroquinone, specifically a beta-D-glucopyranoside of hydroquinone, found in plants such as those from the Ericaceae family. It is most commonly used as an active ingredient in skincare and cosmetic products for its skin-lightening properties, particularly to treat hyperpigmentation and conditions involving overactive melanocytes. Arbutin acts primarily as a competitive inhibitor of the enzyme tyrosinase by binding to its L-tyrosine site, thereby suppressing melanin synthesis (melanogenesis) in human skin. This results in reduced pigmentation and lighter skin tone. Compared to hydroquinone, arbutin is less cytotoxic to melanocytes and considered gentler on the skin[1][2][4][6]. Arbutin has also been used historically as an anti-infective agent for urinary tract health and as a diuretic[1][2]. Both natural (plant-derived) and synthetic forms exist.
