Overview

Arcitumomab is a murine monoclonal antibody Fab' fragment that targets carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), a protein overexpressed in the majority of colorectal cancers. It is used as a radiopharmaceutical diagnostic agent when labeled with technetium-99m (as Technetium Tc-99m arcitumomab or CEA-Scan) for imaging and detection of colorectal cancer lesions. The Fab' fragment binds selectively to cell-surface CEA on tumor cells; after radiolabeling with technetium-99m, it accumulates in tumors and enables high-resolution imaging via single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). This allows clinicians to localize primary and metastatic lesions, assess remission or progression, and monitor for recurrence following resection[1][5][6][7].
