Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Arctii fructus is the dried ripe fruit of *Arctium lappa* (Asteraceae), commonly known as burdock. It is a traditional herbal medicine used in China (牛蒡子/niu bang zi), Japan, and other regions for over 1800 years. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it is used to "disperse wind-heat," clear heat and toxins, benefit the throat, vent rashes, and moisten intestines. Modern pharmacological studies have identified lignans (notably arctiin and its metabolite arctigenin) as major active constituents with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, antiviral, hypoglycemic/lipid-lowering effects. Experimental data suggest potential benefits for coughs/inflammation (respiratory tract), skin conditions (acne/psoriasis/rashes), diabetes management via hypoglycemic action; some evidence also points to antitumor activity[1][3][4][6][8][9]. However clinical evidence remains limited.
