Overview

Areca nut is the seed of the Areca catechu palm and is commonly known as betel nut. It is widely used in South and Southeast Asia as a recreational stimulant and in traditional medicine. The primary active compound in areca nut is arecoline, which acts as a central nervous system stimulant. Chewing areca nut produces effects such as mild euphoria, heightened alertness, increased stamina, and a sense of well-being due to its cholinergic activity on muscarinic acetylcholine receptors[2][5][6]. In traditional medicine systems like Ayurveda and Chinese medicine, it has been used for digestive stimulation (as an appetite stimulant), anti-parasitic purposes (expelling intestinal worms), diuretic effects, respiratory health support (expectorant), pain relief for joints when applied topically with oil mixtures, menstrual regulation support for women when consumed as decoction or powder mixed with lime juice[3][4][6]. Despite these uses—and some early research suggesting possible benefits for conditions like schizophrenia or stroke—there is no robust scientific evidence supporting its efficacy for any medical condition[1][4]. Prolonged use leads to addiction; the World Health Organization classifies it as a carcinogen due to strong links with oral cancer and other adverse health outcomes including cardiovascular disease and chronic kidney disease[2][8]. Side effects include oral submucous fibrosis (a precancerous condition), gum problems, increased risk of cancers (oral cavity/esophagus/liver), arrhythmias/heart attack/stroke at high doses or long-term use; acute toxicity can be fatal if large amounts are ingested[1][8].
