AREDS-2

AREDS-2 is a specific combination dietary supplement developed as an outcome of the Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 (AREDS2), sponsored by the National Eye Institute. It is designed to slow the progression of intermediate age-related macular degeneration (AMD) to advanced AMD. The formulation contains high doses of antioxidants and minerals that are not typically achievable through diet or standard multivitamins. The mechanism involves antioxidant activity and support for retinal health via carotenoids and essential micronutrients. The key ingredients in the standard daily dose are: - Lutein (10 mg) - Zeaxanthin (2 mg) - Vitamin C (500 mg) - Vitamin E (400 IU) - Zinc oxide (80 mg; sometimes lower doses used in some products) - Copper as cupric oxide (2 mg) The original beta-carotene component from earlier formulations was replaced with lutein and zeaxanthin due to safety concerns for smokers.
