Arformoterol is a long-acting beta2-adrenergic receptor agonist (LABA) and bronchodilator used for the long-term maintenance treatment of bronchoconstriction in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. It is the (R,R)-enantiomer of formoterol, exhibiting approximately two-fold greater potency than racemic formoterol. Arformoterol works by selectively stimulating beta2-adrenergic receptors in bronchial smooth muscle, leading to increased intracellular cyclic AMP levels, relaxation of airway smooth muscle, and inhibition of mast cell mediator release such as histamine and leukotrienes. This results in improved airflow and reduced symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, coughing, and chest tightness[1][2][3][5][6]. The drug is administered via inhalation solution using a nebulizer.
