Overview

Argania spinosa, commonly known as the argan tree, is a species endemic to southwestern Morocco. It is highly valued for its fruit, from which argan oil is extracted. This oil and various extracts from the plant are rich in bioactive compounds, including polyphenols, flavonoids, tocopherols (like gamma-tocopherol), phytosterols (schottenol and spinasterol), and fatty acids (oleic and linoleic acids). Research indicates that Argania spinosa and its derivatives possess significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, contributing to protective effects against oxidative stress, inflammation, and various organ toxicities. It is being investigated for its potential in treating conditions such as urolithiasis, photodamage skin, lipid metabolism disorders, liver steatosis, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and for its skin whitening effects.
