Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Arginine is a semi-essential amino acid that plays a key role in protein synthesis and various metabolic processes. In the body it is converted to nitric oxide by nitric oxide synthase; nitric oxide acts as a vasodilator by relaxing blood vessels and improving blood flow[6][8]. Arginine also stimulates the release of growth hormone and insulin[6][8]. It is used clinically as an intravenous diagnostic agent to assess pituitary function (growth hormone stimulation test) and as an oral or parenteral nutritional supplement for patients requiring additional protein intake or with specific metabolic needs[4][5]. It has been studied for cardiovascular conditions such as angina pectoris and hypertension; erectile dysfunction; peripheral arterial disease; pre-eclampsia; necrotizing enterocolitis in premature infants; male infertility; immune support in critical illness or after surgery; wound healing support; kidney function post-transplantation[6][8][10].
