Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Arginine + canola oil is a combination of the semi-essential amino acid arginine and the edible vegetable oil derived from rapeseed (canola). This combination has been studied primarily as an immunonutritional supplement, especially in clinical settings such as kidney transplant recipients and critically ill or injured patients. Arginine serves as a precursor for nitric oxide synthesis, which plays a key role in vasodilation, immune modulation, and wound healing. Canola oil provides essential fatty acids (mainly monounsaturated fats) that may have anti-inflammatory properties. Clinical studies suggest that supplementation with oral arginine (typically 9–30 g/day) combined with canola oil (about 30 mL/day) is safe and may reduce complications such as organ rejection, infection, new-onset diabetes, and cardiovascular disease after kidney transplantation. The mechanism of action involves enhancement of immune function through improved leukocyte activity and modulation of inflammatory responses[1][3][8]. This combination is not an approved pharmaceutical drug but rather used as part of specialized nutritional support protocols.
