Overview

Arginine + glutamine is a combination of two conditionally essential amino acids, L-arginine and L-glutamine. Both are used as nutritional supplements, particularly in clinical nutrition for critically ill or surgical patients. Glutamine serves as a major fuel source for rapidly dividing cells such as enterocytes and immune cells, supporting gut barrier function, immunomodulation, antioxidant status, and tissue repair. Arginine is a precursor to nitric oxide (NO) and polyamines; it modulates immune response, wound healing, vasodilation via NO production, and cellular proliferation. The combined administration of these amino acids has been shown to have additive or synergistic effects on gut barrier integrity and inflammatory response in some studies[1][5]. However, the evidence base for their combined use remains limited; while some data suggest benefits in intestinal inflammation or sepsis (e.g., reduced pro-inflammatory cytokines), there are also concerns about potential antagonism regarding oxidative stress protection[1][5]. This combination is primarily used as an immunonutrient supplement rather than a pharmaceutical drug.
