Arginine + glutamine + HMB is a specialized nutritional combination consisting of the amino acids L-arginine and L-glutamine along with beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate (HMB), a metabolite of the branched-chain amino acid leucine. This combination is primarily developed as a Food for Special Medical Purposes (FSMP) or medical food to manage conditions characterized by muscle wasting (cachexia), impaired wound healing, and metabolic dysfunction. HMB acts by inhibiting muscle proteolysis and stimulating protein synthesis via the mTOR pathway. Arginine serves as a precursor for nitric oxide and growth hormone, while glutamine supports immune function and serves as a precursor for arginine and glutathione. Together, they synergistically promote collagen deposition and lean body mass preservation. Clinical applications include the treatment of AIDS-associated wasting, cancer cachexia, sarcopenia, and the reduction of visceral adipose tissue in obesity.
