Arginine hydrogen carbonate (also known as arginine bicarbonate) is an investigational oral rinse formulation being studied for the prevention of dental caries and enamel demineralization. It consists of the amino acid L-arginine combined with a bicarbonate buffer. The mechanism of action involves the metabolism of arginine by arginolytic oral bacteria via the arginine deiminase system (ADS). This metabolic process generates ammonia, which neutralizes the glycolytic acids produced by cariogenic bacteria after carbohydrate consumption, thereby raising the dental plaque pH above the critical threshold for enamel demineralization. It is currently being evaluated in clinical trials by researchers at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München to assess its efficacy in maintaining plaque pH during exercise-induced dry mouth or carbohydrate challenges.
