Overview

Arginine PCA, also known as arginine pidolate, is the salt formed by the amino acid L-arginine and L-pyroglutamic acid (pidolic acid). It is a multifunctional compound widely utilized in the cosmetic industry as a humectant and skin-conditioning agent, as both of its components are natural constituents of the skin's Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF). Beyond its topical applications, Arginine PCA is used as a dietary supplement and a pharmaceutical agent, particularly in Europe, to address conditions such as physical and mental fatigue (asthenia). The compound provides a bioavailable source of L-arginine, which serves as a precursor for nitric oxide synthesis and urea cycle metabolism, and L-pyroglutamic acid, which is involved in the gamma-glutamyl cycle and has been studied for potential cognitive-enhancing effects. In clinical settings, it has been investigated for its ability to stimulate the release of growth hormone and improve metabolic recovery after exercise.
