This is a combination of two endogenous peptide hormones—arginine-vasopressin (AVP) and corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF)—administered together to study or modulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Arginine-vasopressin acts as an antidiuretic and vasoconstrictor, while also potentiating the release of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) from pituitary corticotrophs. Corticotropin-releasing factor is a primary stimulator of ACTH secretion. When administered in combination, AVP and CRF act synergistically to greatly enhance ACTH release compared to either agent alone[1][3][4][6]. This synergy has been used experimentally to probe HPA axis function in humans and animals, with potential applications in understanding stress responses and disorders involving adrenal insufficiency.
