Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Arikayce (amikacin liposome inhalation suspension) is a liposomal formulation of the aminoglycoside antibiotic amikacin, developed by Insmed. It is indicated for the treatment of Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) lung disease in adults who have limited or no alternative treatment options, specifically those who do not achieve negative sputum cultures after six months of standard multidrug therapy. The drug utilizes proprietary PULMOVANCE™ liposomal technology to deliver amikacin directly to the lungs via the Lamira® Nebulizer System. This targeted delivery allows the drug to be taken up by lung macrophages, the primary site of MAC infection, while minimizing systemic exposure and the associated risks of ototoxicity and nephrotoxicity. Amikacin works by binding to the bacterial 30S ribosomal subunit, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis and leading to bacterial cell death.
