Drug intelligence / Profile preview
ARIKAYCE (amikacin liposome inhalation suspension) is a liposomal formulation of the aminoglycoside antibiotic amikacin, developed by Insmed Incorporated. It is specifically indicated for the treatment of Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) lung disease in adults who have limited or no alternative treatment options and have failed to achieve negative sputum cultures after at least six months of standard multidrug therapy. The drug utilizes proprietary PULMOVANCE™ liposomal technology to deliver amikacin directly to the lungs via inhalation. These liposomes are designed to be taken up by lung macrophages, which are the primary site of MAC infection. This targeted delivery mechanism allows for high local drug concentrations at the site of infection while minimizing systemic exposure, thereby reducing the risk of severe aminoglycoside-associated toxicities such as ototoxicity and nephrotoxicity.
