Drug intelligence / Profile preview
ARIKAYCE + multi-drug regimen is a combination therapeutic approach for the treatment of Mycobacterium abscessus lung disease. The core component, ARIKAYCE (amikacin liposome inhalation suspension), is a liposomal formulation of the aminoglycoside antibiotic amikacin, developed by Insmed for targeted delivery to the lungs via the LAMIRA nebulizer system. Amikacin exerts its antibacterial effect by binding to the bacterial 30S ribosomal subunit, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis. In this regimen, ARIKAYCE is administered once daily in addition to a standard-of-care multi-drug antibiotic regimen (typically including agents like macrolides, amikacin, or imipenem) as per ATS/IDSA guidelines. This specific combination is currently being evaluated in a Phase 2 open-label trial led by Kevin Winthrop at Oregon Health & Science University to assess its efficacy in achieving culture conversion in patients with treatment-naive or refractory M. abscessus pulmonary disease.
