Overview

Aripiprazole is an atypical antipsychotic (second-generation antipsychotic) used to treat a range of psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia, bipolar I disorder, major depressive disorder (as adjunctive therapy), irritability associated with autism spectrum disorder, and Tourette's syndrome. It acts as a partial agonist at dopamine D2 and serotonin 5‑HT1A receptors and as an antagonist at serotonin 5‑HT2A receptors. This unique mechanism is thought to stabilize dopamine and serotonin activity in the brain, improving symptoms of psychosis, mood disturbances, and behavioral dysregulation. Aripiprazole was originally developed by Otsuka Pharmaceutical[5][6].
