Overview
**Aripiprazole lauroxil** is a long-acting injectable atypical antipsychotic developed by Alkermes. It is an N-acyloxymethyl prodrug of aripiprazole, designed for once-monthly (or less frequent) intramuscular injection. After administration, ALKS 9070 is hydrolyzed in vivo to aripiprazole, the active compound also available under the name Abilify. Its primary indication is the treatment of schizophrenia in adults. The mechanism of action is believed to involve partial agonism at dopamine D2 and serotonin 5-HT1A receptors, and antagonism at serotonin 5-HT2A receptors[1][3][7][9].
