Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ariprazol is an atypical antipsychotic medication marketed by Acino (part of Arcera) containing the active ingredient aripiprazole. It is a small molecule that functions as a partial agonist at dopamine D2 and D3 receptors as well as serotonin 5-HT1A receptors, while also acting as an antagonist at serotonin 5-HT2A receptors. This unique pharmacological profile allows the drug to modulate dopamine activity in the brain, enhancing signaling when dopamine levels are low and reducing it when levels are high. Originally discovered by Otsuka Pharmaceutical, Ariprazol is primarily indicated for the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. It represents a key product in Acino's portfolio for emerging markets in the European Union, Middle East, and Africa.
