Overview

Arnica montana flower is the dried flower head of the Arnica montana plant, a perennial herb in the daisy family native to Europe and parts of North America. It has been used for centuries in traditional herbal medicine, primarily as a topical remedy for pain relief, inflammation reduction, muscle aches, sprains, bruises, and wound healing. The main active constituents are sesquiterpene lactones (notably helenalin), which are believed to contribute to its anti-inflammatory and immunostimulatory effects. Other pharmacological actions include increased respiration rate and volume (in animal studies), mild cardiac stimulation in vitro, uterotonic activity in animal models, inhibition of platelet aggregation (antithrombotic effect), bactericidal/fungicidal activity from root-derived thymol derivatives, and possible cholagogue effects. Despite widespread use topically for musculoskeletal complaints such as osteoarthritis or bruising, clinical efficacy remains unproven by large-scale trials. Oral ingestion is considered unsafe due to toxicity; topical use on unbroken skin is generally regarded as safe short-term[1][2][3][4][5][7].
