Overview

Arnica tincture is a topical herbal preparation made by extracting the flowers of the Arnica montana plant in alcohol. It is used externally for its purported anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, most commonly to treat bruises, sprains, muscle pain, swelling, and osteoarthritis-related discomfort. The active constituents in arnica (such as sesquiterpene lactones) are believed to reduce inflammation by inhibiting enzymes like MMP1 and MMP13 involved in tissue breakdown and modulating immune responses via NF-κB pathways. However, clinical evidence supporting its efficacy remains limited and inconsistent. Arnica tincture should not be ingested or applied to broken skin due to toxicity risks; ingestion can cause severe adverse effects including vomiting, cardiac damage, organ failure, coma or death[1][3][6][7]. Topical use on unbroken skin is considered possibly safe for short-term application.
