Aronia melanocarpa extract is derived from the berries of the Aronia melanocarpa plant, commonly known as black chokeberry. It is rich in polyphenols, particularly anthocyanins, and has demonstrated multiple bioactive properties in preclinical and clinical studies. The extract exhibits anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting the expression of cell adhesion molecules (ICAM-1, VCAM-1), reducing activation of the nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) transcription factor, and decreasing reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in endothelial cells. Experimental data show that administration of the extract reduces pro-inflammatory cytokines (CRP, TNF-α, and IL-6), increases anti-inflammatory IL-10, and elevates the activity of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, GSH-Px, CAT). Clinical and preclinical studies further support potential benefits in reducing risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease, improving certain cognitive functions (notably psychomotor speed and attention), and decreasing body fat and serum triglycerides in animal models. It is widely researched as a dietary supplement for metabolic syndrome, obesity, cardiovascular health, and inflammation-related conditions[1][2][3][4][5].
