Overview

ARP1 (Anti-Rotavirus Protein 1) is a llama-derived, recombinant monovalent heavy-chain antibody fragment (VHH) developed by the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B) in collaboration with Unilever Research and Development. It specifically targets the VP6 protein, a highly conserved and abundant middle-layer protein of the rotavirus, which allows it to neutralize a broad range of rotavirus serotypes and genotypes. Administered orally, ARP1 is designed to treat rotavirus-induced gastroenteritis in infants and children. It is characterized by high stability and resistance to gastric acid, facilitating its delivery to the gut. Clinical studies, including a Phase 2 trial, have demonstrated its efficacy in reducing stool output and the duration of diarrhea in male infants with severe rotavirus infection. The antibody fragment has been produced in various expression systems, including yeast, rice (MucoRice-ARP1), and Lactobacillus.
