Overview

Arrhenatherum elatius pollen is an allergenic extract derived from the pollen of Arrhenatherum elatius, commonly known as false oat grass. It is primarily used in allergy testing and immunotherapy for patients with suspected or confirmed allergies to grass pollens. The extract is administered via skin-prick or intradermal tests to diagnose allergic sensitization, particularly in cases of allergic rhinitis, rhinoconjunctivitis, and asthma triggered by exposure to grass pollens[1][3][4][7]. In immunotherapy (allergy desensitization), standardized extracts may be used under medical supervision for long-term treatment. The mechanism of action involves controlled exposure to the allergen, which modulates immune responses—shifting from a Th2-dominated response (allergic) toward tolerance through induction of regulatory T cells and other immune pathways[6]. Arrhenatherum elatius pollen extracts are regulated as prescription biologics in many countries and have been approved since at least 1967 for diagnostic use[2].
