Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The arsenic-containing traditional Chinese medicine compound, frequently identified in clinical literature as Qinghuang Powder (QHP), is an oral therapeutic developed by Xiyuan Hospital of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. It is specifically formulated for the treatment of myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), including refractory cytopenia with multilineage dysplasia (MDS-RCMD). The compound typically consists of Realgar (containing arsenic sulfide, As4S4) and Indigo Naturalis. Its mechanism of action involves inducing the differentiation of hematopoietic stem cells, promoting apoptosis in malignant myeloid clones through the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and inhibiting cell cycle progression via the inhibition of cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs) by indirubin. In clinical trials, it is often evaluated as an adjunct to standard Western therapies to improve hematological parameters and reduce transfusion requirements in MDS patients.
