Overview

Arsthinol is an organoarsenic small molecule antiprotozoal agent first synthesized in 1949 by Ernst A.H. Friedheim via the reaction of acetarsol with 2,3-dimercaptopropanol. It has been used primarily for the treatment of mild or asymptomatic intestinal amebiasis and yaws, and has demonstrated efficacy against other protozoal infections such as Giardia lamblia and Trichomonas hominis. Arsthinol was marketed under the brand name Balarsen by Endo Products. Among trivalent organoarsenicals, it was considered to be well tolerated at therapeutic doses. More recently, arsthinol has also been studied for potential anticancer activity[1][2][3][4][5].
