Overview

Arteether (also known as beta-arteether or artemether ethyl ether) is a semi-synthetic derivative of artemisinin, a natural sesquiterpene lactone derived from the plant *Artemisia annua*. It is a small molecule antimalarial drug belonging to the endoperoxide class. Arteether is specifically indicated for the treatment of severe malaria, including cerebral malaria, caused by multi-drug resistant strains of *Plasmodium falciparum*. The drug is administered via intramuscular injection. Its mechanism of action involves the cleavage of the endoperoxide bridge by intra-parasitic heme, which generates highly reactive free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS). These radicals covalently bind to and damage essential parasite proteins and membranes, leading to rapid parasite clearance. Protech Telelinks, an Indian pharmaceutical company, manufactures and markets this product under the brand name Betrapro.
