Artefenomel + ferroquine is a novel antimalarial drug combination being developed as a potential single-dose cure for uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria. This combination represents a new generation of antimalarials not directly based on artemisinin derivatives, potentially offering effectiveness against drug-resistant strains of malaria. Artefenomel (formerly known as OZ439) is a novel trioxolane that acts as a potent, fast-acting agent to rapidly kill most parasites in the blood and decrease malaria symptoms. Ferroquine is a long-lasting agent designed to clear the remaining parasites. The combination is specifically being formulated for children and to allow for once-daily dosing, which could improve treatment adherence and help prevent the emergence of further drug-resistant strains.
