Overview
Artemether + lumefantrine is a fixed-dose oral combination antimalarial drug composed of two active ingredients: artemether and lumefantrine. Artemether is a fast-acting derivative of artemisinin that rapidly kills Plasmodium falciparum parasites in the blood, while lumefantrine has a longer half-life and eliminates residual parasites to prevent recrudescence. This complementary mechanism makes the combination highly effective against uncomplicated malaria caused by P. falciparum, including strains resistant to other antimalarials such as chloroquine. The drug is not used for malaria prophylaxis but is widely recommended as first-line therapy in many countries and included on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines. Common side effects include headache, dizziness, loss of appetite, muscle/joint pain, fever; serious adverse events may include QT interval prolongation[2][3][4][5][7].
