Overview

Lumartem is a fixed-dose combination antimalarial drug containing artemether (20 mg) and lumefantrine (120 mg). It belongs to the artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) class, which is the standard of care for treating uncomplicated malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum. Artemether, a semi-synthetic derivative of artemisinin, acts rapidly to reduce the parasite burden by interfering with hemoglobin metabolism and generating toxic free radicals that damage parasite proteins. Lumefantrine is a long-acting aryl amino alcohol that eliminates residual parasites to prevent recrudescence. Lumartem is specifically indicated for acute, uncomplicated malaria infections and is not used for severe or complicated cases or for prophylaxis. It is administered orally and dosed according to patient body weight.
