Artemin is a neurotrophic factor belonging to the glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) family ligands. It is a disulfide-linked homodimeric protein encoded by the ARTN gene in humans. Artemin primarily supports neuronal development, differentiation, survival, and regeneration by signaling through a receptor complex composed of RET proto-oncogene receptor tyrosine kinase and GDNF family receptor alpha 3 co-receptor. It also binds to neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM), which is required for some of its biological effects such as neurite outgrowth and neuroprotection[1][5][8]. Artemin has been shown to promote regeneration of injured peripheral nerves and functional recovery after nerve injury[4]. In addition to its role in the nervous system, artemin has been implicated in oncogenicity and drug resistance in certain cancers via activation of pathways such as AKT[6]. Clinical trials have investigated artemin for conditions like sciatica/radicular syndrome/painful lumbar radiculopathy[3].
