Overview
Artemisia absinthium pollen extract is a biological product derived from the pollen of the wormwood plant, used primarily in the field of allergology. It serves a dual purpose: as a diagnostic tool for identifying type I hypersensitivity through skin prick testing and as a therapeutic agent in allergen immunotherapy (AIT). The extract contains a complex mixture of proteins (allergens) that, when introduced to a sensitized individual, cross-link IgE antibodies bound to the high-affinity IgE receptor (FcεRI) on mast cells and basophils, triggering the release of inflammatory mediators. In the context of immunotherapy, repeated exposure to increasing doses of the extract aims to induce immunological tolerance, characterized by a shift from a Th2-dominated allergic response to a Th1/Treg response and the production of blocking IgG4 antibodies.
