Overview

African wormwood (*Artemisia afra*) is a perennial woody shrub native to Southern and Eastern Africa, widely utilized in traditional medicine for treating respiratory infections, fever, and malaria. Unlike its relative *Artemisia annua*, it contains only trace amounts of artemisinin, yet it exhibits significant antimalarial activity through artemisinin-independent pathways, notably by disrupting the lipid metabolism of *Plasmodium falciparum*. Currently, it is being evaluated in Phase 2 clinical trials for its ability to clear asymptomatic malaria reservoirs and inhibit gametocyte transmission. Beyond its antimalarial profile, *A. afra* extracts have demonstrated in vitro potential against *Mycobacterium tuberculosis* and the SARS-CoV-2 virus by inhibiting the 3CL protease and the spike protein's binding to ACE2 receptors.
