Overview

Artemisia californica pollen extract is a biological allergen extract derived from the pollen of the California Sagebrush (*Artemisia californica*), a shrub native to the coastal regions of California. It is primarily utilized in clinical allergy practice for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. As a diagnostic agent, it is used in percutaneous or intradermal skin testing to identify patients with Type I hypersensitivity to California Sagebrush pollen. As a therapeutic agent, it is employed in allergen immunotherapy (hyposensitization therapy), where gradually increasing doses of the extract are administered subcutaneously to induce immunological tolerance. The mechanism of action involves shifting the immune response from a Th2-mediated allergic profile to a Th1/Treg-mediated response, leading to the production of "blocking" IgG4 antibodies and a reduction in allergen-specific IgE-mediated mast cell degranulation.
