Overview

Artemisia dracunculus pollen, commonly known as tarragon pollen, is a biological substance used in the field of allergology as an allergen extract. It is primarily indicated for the diagnosis of tarragon-induced allergic sensitization via skin prick testing and for the treatment of allergic rhinitis and conjunctivitis through allergen immunotherapy (AIT). The extract contains various proteins that act as allergens; when introduced to a sensitized individual, these proteins cross-link specific IgE antibodies bound to high-affinity receptors (FcεRI) on the surface of mast cells and basophils, triggering the release of inflammatory mediators. In a therapeutic context, repeated administration of the extract in increasing doses induces immunological tolerance by promoting the expansion of regulatory T cells (Tregs), increasing the production of IL-10, and stimulating the synthesis of allergen-specific IgG4 antibodies which act as blocking antibodies to prevent IgE-mediated responses.
