Overview

Artemisia tea infusion is a botanical drug preparation derived from the dried leaves and twigs of the Artemisia species, specifically *Artemisia annua* and *Artemisia afra*. It is primarily investigated for its antimalarial properties, specifically for the eradication of *Plasmodium* carriage in asymptomatic individuals to reduce malaria transmission reservoirs. While *A. annua* contains the potent sesquiterpene lactone artemisinin, *A. afra* contains negligible amounts, suggesting that other phytochemical constituents within the plant matrix contribute to its anti-parasitemic and gametocidal effects. The drug is administered as a hot water infusion and has been evaluated in Phase 2 clinical trials in Cameroon, sponsored by the Académie de recherche et d'enseignement supérieur (ARES).
