Overview

Artemisia tridentata pollen is a non-standardized allergenic extract derived from the pollen of the Artemisia tridentata plant, commonly known as Big Sagebrush. [1] It is a biologic product used for the diagnosis and treatment of type I hypersensitivity reactions (allergies) to sagebrush pollen, a significant cause of hay fever (allergic rhinitis) and allergic asthma, particularly in the western United States. [1, 2, 4] For diagnostic purposes, the extract is used in skin prick tests to identify sensitization by eliciting a localized allergic reaction. [13] For therapeutic use, it is administered as allergen-specific immunotherapy (e.g., allergy shots or sublingual drops), which aims to induce immune tolerance. [5, 6] This process is thought to involve modulating the immune system's response to the pollen, shifting it from an allergic Th2 response to a more tolerant Th1/Treg response. [16, 17] The extract exhibits significant cross-reactivity with pollens from other Artemisia species (like mugwort), making it potentially useful for diagnosing and treating a broader range of sagebrush and mugwort allergies.
