Overview

Artemisia vulgaris root is derived from Artemisia vulgaris, commonly known as mugwort, an aromatic, herbaceous, perennial plant belonging to the daisy family Asteraceae. The root system consists of numerous horizontal branched rhizomes. Historically, it has been extensively utilized in traditional Chinese, European, and Hindu medicine for a wide array of ailments. The plant contains a rich profile of phytochemicals, including flavonoids, essential oils, phenolic acids, coumarins, sterols, carotenoids, vitamins, and sesquiterpene lactones such as vulgarin, artemisinin, scopoletin, camphene, camphor, sabinene, and derivatives of quercetin and kaempferol. The root is traditionally valued as a tonic, for boosting energy, and for addressing various gastrointestinal issues like colic, diarrhea, constipation, cramps, weak digestion, and worm infestations. It is also believed to stimulate bile and acid production, support liver function, enhance circulation, and calm the nervous system. Research suggests it possesses diverse pharmacological properties, including anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, hepatoprotective, antispasmodic, antinociceptive, antibacterial, antihypertensive, antihyperlipidemic, and antifungal effects.
