Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Artemisinin + lumefantrine (commonly administered as the derivative artemether in combination with lumefantrine) is a fixed-dose artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) used for the treatment of acute, uncomplicated malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum. Originally developed by scientists at the Academy of Military Medical Sciences in Beijing, China, and later co-developed and commercialized by Novartis, this combination is a cornerstone of global malaria control. The therapy leverages two distinct mechanisms of action: the fast-acting artemisinin component (such as artemether) rapidly reduces the parasite biomass by generating toxic reactive oxygen species upon activation by heme iron, while the slower-acting, longer-lasting lumefantrine prevents the detoxification of heme into non-toxic hemozoin, clearing residual parasites and preventing recrudescence.
