Artemisinin ethyl ether amine maleate (also known as β-aminoarteether maleate or SM934) is a water-soluble, small-molecule artemisinin derivative developed by the Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Unlike traditional artemisinins used for malaria, SM934 is being investigated for its potent immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory properties. It is approximately 35-fold more potent than dihydroartemisinin in suppressing lymphocyte proliferation. The drug is currently in Phase II clinical trials in China for the treatment of active systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in adults. Beyond SLE, preclinical and clinical exploratory studies have suggested potential therapeutic benefits in other autoimmune and inflammatory conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and various nephropathies.
