Overview
Arterin is a brand of dietary supplements marketed for the management of blood cholesterol levels and dyslipidemia. The product line originally gained prominence for its use of red yeast rice extract containing **monacolin K**, a naturally occurring compound chemically identical to the statin drug lovastatin, which acts as an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor. Due to regulatory changes regarding monacolin K levels in the European Union, newer formulations such as **Arterin Cholesterol** have been developed. These typically contain a combination of plant sterols (phytosterols), artichoke extract (*Cynara scolymus*), and vitamin C (ascorbic acid). Plant sterols work by competing with cholesterol for absorption in the digestive tract, while artichoke extract is intended to support liver function and lipid metabolism. The product is developed and marketed by Omega Pharma, a subsidiary of Perrigo.
