ArthroMicroPerMed is an experimental regenerative therapy developed by Biohellenika for the treatment of osteoarthritis and joint damage. The platform utilizes a personalized medicine approach, combining autologous mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) isolated from the patient's hip or knee with an injectable "smart" biomaterial scaffold. This scaffold is composed of elastin and fibroin hydrogels and is functionalized with Bone Morphogenetic Protein-7 (BMP7) and Transforming Growth Factor-beta (TGF-β) peptides to promote chondrogenesis and cartilage regeneration. Additionally, the scaffold incorporates collagen and laminin peptides to recruit endogenous stem cells and poly-diacetylene (PDA) sensors for the real-time detection of bacterial infections. The program also investigates the role of microbiome metabolites in the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis to optimize therapeutic outcomes.
