Articaine lozenge

Articaine lozenge is a novel topical formulation of the amide-type local anesthetic articaine, specifically developed for pharyngeal anesthesia. Developed by researchers at Helsinki University Hospital, it is designed to improve patient comfort and compliance during upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (gastroscopy). Articaine works by reversibly binding to and blocking voltage-gated sodium channels on the internal surface of nerve cell membranes, preventing the influx of sodium ions and the subsequent propagation of action potentials. This results in a localized loss of sensation. The lozenge formulation offers a fast onset of action and low systemic toxicity, providing an alternative to traditional sprays or gels for procedural sedation and anesthesia.
